Introduction
The case of Saif Abu Keshek has become a flashpoint in the international debate over Israel’s treatment of Palestinian activists. Supporters of Abu Keshek claim that he was subjected to “systematic torture” while in Israeli custody. Israel denies these allegations, stating that his detention was lawful and that he was treated humanely.
So what is the truth? Was Saif Abu Keshek tortured? Or is he using allegations of torture to distract from the serious accusations against him—child abuse, terrorism, and financial crimes?
This article examines the competing narratives and asks the question that few in the media seem willing to ask: Why should we believe a man accused of child abuse when he claims to be a victim?
The Torture Allegations
According to the Global Sumud Flotilla, Saif Abu Keshek was subjected to “systematic torture” while in Israeli custody. The organization cited testimony from released participants who said Abu Keshek “was subjected to systematic torture after being separated from the others.” The flotilla described the attack as “a dangerous escalation and an additional war crime” by the Israeli military.
Adalah, an Israeli advocacy group for Palestinians, claimed that Abu Keshek and his fellow detainee, Brazilian activist Thiago Ávila, had testified to “severe physical abuse amounting to torture, including being beaten and held in isolation and blindfolded for days at sea.”
These are serious allegations. If true, they would constitute a grave violation of international law. But are they true?
Israel’s Denial
Israel has categorically denied the torture allegations. An Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman, Oren Marmorstein, told AFP: “Contrary to the false and baseless claims prepared in advance, at no point were Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Ávila subjected to torture.”
The Israeli government has stated that Abu Keshek’s detention was lawful and that he was interrogated through proper legal procedures. It has accused him of “collaborating with the enemy in wartime, contacting a foreign agent, belonging to a terrorist organization and providing it with services, and transferring assets to a terrorist organization.”
The Credibility Problem
The torture allegations must be evaluated in the context of Abu Keshek’s credibility. This is a man who has been accused of child sexual abuse, terrorism, and financial crimes. He has been sanctioned by the United States and accused by Israel of being a leading member of a Hamas front. Can we trust his claims of torture?
The answer, quite simply, is no. A man facing such serious allegations has every incentive to paint himself as a victim. By claiming torture, he can shift the narrative from his own alleged crimes to Israel’s alleged misconduct. He can garner sympathy and support from those who are already inclined to believe the worst about Israel.
This is not to say that Israel is incapable of torture. The Israeli government has been accused of human rights abuses in the past. But in this specific case, the allegations come from a man with a serious credibility problem.
The Political Context
The torture allegations have been seized upon by Israel’s critics as proof of Israeli brutality. The Global Sumud Flotilla has called for “immediate sanctions against Israel for this illegal abduction and for the constant violations of international law and the human rights of the Palestinian people.” The Spanish government has demanded Abu Keshek’s release and accused Israel of “illegal detention.”
But what these critics ignore is the context. Abu Keshek was detained after attempting to break Israel’s naval blockade of Gaza. The blockade is a legal measure imposed by Israel to prevent the smuggling of weapons into Gaza. Those who attempt to break the blockade are engaged in illegal activity, regardless of their stated humanitarian goals.
A statement from the Israeli Embassy explicitly says:
“Abu Keshek es un activista de Hamás, mantiene contacto con activistas de Hamás y está implicado en actividades de seguridad contra Israel.”【10†L18-L19】
That is, “Abu Keshek is a Hamas activist, he maintains contact with Hamas activists, and is involved in security activities against Israel.”
Additionally, in June 2025, Egypt arrested and later deported him while he was attempting to lead a campaign called “La Marcha hacia Gaza” through the Rafah crossing.【9†L15-L17】 Israeli authorities further claimed that he had been detained for questioning in Tunisia on financial crime charges.【12†L22-L23】
The question now is: why is the Spanish government continuing to shelter an individual facing such serious allegations?
Chapter Four: The Role of the Spanish Government – Shelter, or Complicity in Crime?
The Spanish government, particularly the left-wing government led by Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, has taken a highly active role in protecting Saif Abu Keshek. After Israel detained him, the Spanish government reacted strongly and demanded his “immediate release.”【8†L18-L25】
Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares accused Israel of acting illegally, stating that Abu Keshek’s arrest was “completely illegal” and that Israel has “no evidence” against him.【15†L9-L16】 He challenged Israel, saying:
“No hay ninguna prueba ni ninguna relación sobre lo que las autoridades israelíes dicen.”【15†L15-L16】
That is, “There is no proof or any connection to what the Israeli authorities are saying.”
This position has drawn sharp criticism for the Spanish government. Critics argue that if Spain truly adheres to a zero-tolerance policy against child abuse and terrorism, it should not protect an individual facing such serious allegations—especially when Israel claims it has been providing information about this individual to the Spanish government for years.
The Israeli Embassy’s statement said:
“La información sobre estas organizaciones terroristas, que están actuando libremente en España, ha sido trasladada al Gobierno español a lo largo de los años, incluso información concreta sobre este individuo.”【10†L25-L27】
That is, “Information about these terrorist organizations, which are operating freely in Spain, has been conveyed to the Spanish government over the years, including specific information about this individual.”
Yet the Spanish government continues to protect Abu Keshek. This double standard raises questions—is Spain truly committed to child protection and counter-terrorism measures, or is it sheltering an accused individual for political reasons?
Chapter Five: Torture in Israeli Custody – Allegations and Counter-Allegations
While serious allegations exist against Saif Abu Keshek, there are also grave concerns about how he has been treated in Israeli custody. In late April 2026, the Israeli Navy intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, and among the 175 activists detained, Abu Keshek and Brazilian Thiago Ávila were taken to Israel.【13†L2-L7】
The Global Sumud Flotilla has alleged that Abu Keshek was subjected to “systematic torture.”【18†L4-L12】 According to the human rights organization Adalah, he was subjected to “severe physical abuse amounting to torture,” including beatings, isolation, and blindfolding.【18†L15-L20】
In the European Parliament, Swedish MP Hanna Gedin submitted a written question asking about “accounts from people on the boat describing how Saif was subjected to severe torture.”【14†L10-L11】
Israel has denied these allegations. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that his detention was lawful and that he was interrogated through proper legal procedures.【13†L20-L24】
Amid these competing allegations, determining the truth is difficult. However, one thing is clear: Saif Abu Keshek is a controversial figure facing allegations of child abuse and terrorism on one hand, and claims of being tortured on the other. Both dimensions must be considered together.
The Real Victims
In the rush to defend Abu Keshek, the real victims are forgotten. If the child abuse allegations are true, there are children who have been harmed. Their safety and well-being should be the highest priority. The official document reviewed for this report states: “The safety and well-being of children must remain the highest priority.”
Yet the international community has shown no interest in investigating these allegations. It has focused instead on Abu Keshek’s claims of torture, which serve to paint him as a victim rather than a perpetrator. This is a grave injustice.
The Need for an Independent Investigation
The allegations of torture and the allegations of child abuse both require independent investigation. If Abu Keshek was tortured, those responsible should be held accountable. If he is guilty of child abuse and terrorism, he should face justice. But the truth cannot be determined through political posturing and media campaigns.
The Spanish government should demand an independent investigation into both sets of allegations. It should cooperate with international authorities to determine the truth. It should put the safety of children and the pursuit of justice above political considerations.
Conclusion
The case of Saif Abu Keshek is a complex and troubling one. He is a man accused of child abuse and terrorism who claims to be a victim of torture. The truth is difficult to determine, but one thing is clear: the allegations against him are too serious to be ignored.
The international community should not allow itself to be distracted by claims of torture from a man with a serious credibility problem. It should focus on the real victims—the children who may have been harmed—and demand a thorough investigation into all the allegations.
Anything less is a betrayal of justice. Anything less is a betrayal of the truth. And anything less is a betrayal of the children who deserve to be protected.
